This became apparent to me a few weeks ago during a visit there, adding credence to a theory Drew and I had formulated previously. I’m hoping to update this thread accordingly in due course... the ‘evidence’ so far seems to suggest this blue, cloth title was possibly exclusive to the 2nd Battalion. Many thanks for your input, JT Last edited by Jelly Terror; 11-04-18 at 04:12 PM. Reason: Typo correction |

By way of an update to this thread, I should like to include the following which, in the absence as yet of supporting documentary evidence, sheds some light on the cloth/blue 'LONDON SCOTTISH' title mentioned above.
Following some joint research, forum member 'Drew' and I, have provisionally concluded that this title was probably worn by the 2nd Battalion of the regiment. At present there is scant info to substantiate this, and at the time of posting, our (to date) limited research has meant that not all avenues have yet been exhausted. However, each instance in which we have been able so far to provide photogrpahic evidence of the title apparently being worn, has depicted members of the 2nd Battalion. 1) Sgt. Train receiving his VC in July 1918: Train VC.jpg We know for certain that Sgt. Train is wearing this title, as there is a portrait in oils of him at the London Scottish HQ, clearly showing it on his shoulder (below): Oil.jpg 2) Corporal Edwards, wounded near Beersheba in 1917: Edwards.jpg 3) The 2nd Battalion crossing the Jordan in 1918(?): Jordan Crossing.jpg So what of the Clowes letter in post #12, asserting that up until the inter-war years the regiment had not worn worsted shoulder titles? Clowes Letter.jpg Could Clowes simply have been mistaken or possibly even unaware that the 2nd Battalion might have worn the cloth title? Could he perhaps have been stretching the truth in order to manipulate the situation to his advantage? Either way, it is clear that further research is required. Great stuff, JT. I was very impressed at your digging all this up. Also thanks to Mark. It is very nice to read that your example came with WW1 cap badges/STs.
I think you are being far too generous about my input though, JT. I'm pretty sure it was you who found all of this evidence. Cheers, Chris |

Another 2/14th man, Rfn. John Swan Thomson with pals, wearing what appears to be the 2/14th Bn embroidered title and yellow cloth patch on sun helmet (posted on the GWF Postcards thread).
