Default Falkland Islands Defence Force.

Hello all, sorry if I come across as a right thicko but something has always puzzled me about the FIDF cap badge and I would like to know, if anyone would be so kind, just what is the object surrounding the shield, the thing that bears the motto "Desire The Right"?. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Phil. A plaited strap sounds more like something "Miss Whiplash" would have found a use for.

I can't help wondering what it was used for. Something to do with ships or sheep maybe, it's got me baffled.
