9th Gurkhas - treasure trove
I just bought this small lot of 9GR items. The buttons are nice but not particularly rare - the boss badge was intriguing as shown in the original photo - as it has the 9 above the blades of the kukris. I know of no 9GR badge or crest where the 9 is in that position - I had my suspicions and now I have the badge in hand I'm convinced I know what has happened - the badge is entirely original but I believe someone has dismantled the badge to inspect it or clean it and has put it back together incorrectly. I've reassembled as it would have been worn and it's still an early variant that I didn't have in my collection so would have been worth the purchase price alone. However the real treasure is the shoulder titles . Here's what the Gurkha Museum's book says (P30 Paragraph 5) "The earliest photographs in the Gurkha Museum of British Officers in khaki drill show a separate 9 and G black metal shoulder title. These appear in 1899 in Lansdowne, in 1905 at Dehra Dun and in 1911 also in Dera Dun. There are no authentic specimens of this title known. "
So I believe I now have the only matched pair of these titles known to man! Last edited by gurkharifles; 03-11-20 at 05:46 PM. Reason: More information |

Rare find indeed! The old Gurkha regiments officer badges are among the hardest to find in my experience. You did the right thing in putting the boss to the correct configuration.
