I also dug out these, which may be of interest in your research. They were retrieved from oblivion just in time, as the condition of the label bears out! I will try and quote the details, however there may be others better qualified in the subject and who may be kind enough to offer fuller assistance.
Items consist of Qty 2 tan-coloured and Qty 1 dark-brown coloured leather chinstraps, attached to a 3 5/8" x 2 1/8" card label, with inked annotations. Label details: IDENTIFICATION LABEL A.F. 8061 (There may be a missing letter/digit here) SECT CB PART NO 1026 DESIGNATION Strap, chin, WO/1, Brown QTY Y CONTROL NO 004168 DRS. NO. J.D. & Co. Ltd. 52-5396. As can be seen, there are 2 differing style of chinstrap attached to same label! GTB |

I was issued a 'Cap Royal' 6¾" with Scarlet Band & Piping of the soft top variety in April 1970 and it came with a black plastic chin strap with plastic adjuster buckle (this was a separate item along with 2 small RAOC buttons and Cap Badge) while some were issued with the stiffer wired cap in different sizes, but all with the plastic strap as far as I can remember.

That's it. Just an extra strap over the buttons. Most seen with RAF Police Dog Demonstration teams and RAF Regiment Queen's Colour Squadron. Officers and WOs used/use a different black strap with sliders -no buckles- similar to an Army officers in construction. Regards, Paul.
PS. RAF other ranks caps changed a couple of times in the 1990s I think- 1st change a sown on badge- then a slightly different cap that did away with the fitting holes for a metal badge and had a brown head band inside. During my time the head band was an off white/cream colour- both RAF SD cap and RAF Police white cap. Last edited by wardog; 08-11-15 at 04:47 PM. |
