I'm surprised to hear of an ATTAHED personnel cap badge, in my experience attached personnel alway wore their own cap badge . In the case of REME ., clothing regs state that when attached to non-REME units personnel may wear up tp 2 embellishments , in most cases this would be shoulder titles (Above their own) , lanyard or headdress. As a former REME sergeant who during my time was attached to RHG, RA, RASC, SASC and R>Sigs I never wore any other cap badge but my own. In 1963 I had a friend (RAOC)attached to SAS HQ who wore his own badge nd a SAS beret.

If it is the correct badge, my information was that it was once worn by Non-Sabre members of 21 until they had passed sellection and accepted into the Regiment.

Believe it first came into use in the late 1980’s.
“my information was that it was once worn by Non-Sabre members of 21 until they had passed selection and accepted into the Regiment.” Not all went on to pass selection. Some stayed in RHQ jobs etc. Hence the reason for this badge. I imagine that REME, RAOC, etc still wore their Corps/Regiment cap badge. No idea if still worn or if not when it was phased out. |

21 sas beret badge
Hi Guys
Quite a lot of insight about this badge, no its not April the 1st - ha ha. This badge i have been told by a very good source was in use for a very short time around 96, at the time 21 wore the usual sas cloth beret badge and attached personnel wore this badge, sewn onto the beige Beret. Whatever the truth is, its still a nice badge to have in the collection and quite rare. Cheers Brian |

I think this might clear this up.
As has been said, attached personnel will wear their own capbadge in the sand coloured beret. But if you've attempted selection and failed you may be invited to join the support Sqn . Again,if you are from another TA unit you would wear you own capbadge but if you had no parent Regt you could wear the cloth Artists badge whilst serving in the support Sqn. |

21 SAS attached
Friends,
Brian is completely correct and his source is reliable. This Mars & Minerva cloth beret badge was indeed shortlived: it was introduced late in 1996 and was worn for about 18 months. It was worn on a sand beret by attached personnel and on a black beret by personnel undergoing selection - to which it was issued and then returned to stores. Please find attached some pics: one is comparing the beret badge (on the right) to the original badge worn on the arm by early 21 SAS (on the left). The other shows the beret badge on a sand beret. Excuse my ignorance folks - but in the helpful first image from Johan I am presuming the beret badge is the one on the right with more black detailing.
Sorry but eyes being a pain again Thanks for this useful thread - it is not something I was aware of and is good to learn. Mike Last edited by Mike B; 31-10-16 at 01:22 PM. |

Arm badge vs beret badge
Friends,
Sorry, I should have been more precise! The original arm badge is on the left! Cheers, Johan PS: has anybody seen evidence of the badge being worn on a black beret? |

Black vs blue
hi Marc,
I will see what I can dig up. The badge is of course very black. Cheers, Johan |
