Default s3.amazonaws.com

What is s3.amazonaws.com and why does the Forum need about 10 seconds to read it when I open new posts? Anyone else experiencing this lately? Makes for slow going.

Rgds, Thomas.

That is a cloud hosting service.

People host websites, forums and other online things there.

That cannot be anything to do with this website's hosting but posters can have images hosted anywhere and link to them in posts. You then have to wait for the image host to downland the picture. If that is the problem it's out of our control.

Always better to use the forum image upload facility to add images if you can.

The last couple of days the longer I am on the Forum, the slower it gets. Used to be that when I click on a post my computer immediately takes me there, now it starts as fast as I'm used to but gets progressively slower over time, slow enough to be able to read "reading s3.amazonaws.com."

Rgds, Thomas.

Even when posting an imageless text private message on the forum s3.amazonaws.com needs to be read, odd!

I just remembered that the cookie popup script is hosted on amazon's servers I believe. Have you ever seen the cookie warning popup on this site? (it should appear at the bottom of the page)

If you have a look at this page you should be able to see a cookie consent popup hosted on amazon, same type as ours.

Click one of the layout images in the first part, 'choose a theme'. Ours is the third one along.

Yes I've seen the cookie warning, also fairly recent, and click on 'Got it!' when I log in to unclutter my screen.
Still, why does the Forum become progressively slower while I'm on the Forum?

Hi Thomas

Have you noticed anything else happening on your screen? Like new pop-ups, redirection in browser, etc?
Is it only the forum that causes it to slow down?

Colin

Nope, nothing else happening. Yes only the forum and very recent.
This time I haven't clicked on the cookie 'Got it!', so far so good.

Not clicking on the 'Got it!' cookie notice gave me the usual speedy Forum experience, next time I'll try with clicking on 'Got it!' again to confirm.
Last time even sending a private message here on the forum to a fellow forum member took 10 plus seconds to read 's3.amazonaws.com'.

What Anti Virus are you using?
There have been some reported incidents with s3.amazonaws.com and Trojans, leading to slower performance, but this would apply to all internet sites, not just the forum, obviously. Could be your Anti Virus is targeting a cookie from s3.amazonaws.com, and scanning to prevent any perceived infection. Again, though, this should happen wherever you are on the net. Have you tried CCleaner to rid all cookies and caches?

I use Avast and Firefox and use CCleaner every day before turning off my computer. All have the most recent updates. I have not noticed any slowing down anywhere else when I use the internet.

I use Avast too. But I use Chrome. I've never noticed any lag on here.
Very odd.

The face that this is happening after you visited s3.amazonaws.com is a bit of a coincidence, though. There are free trojan removal tools for checking for known trojans that can piggyback from s3.amazonaws.com. Might be worth doing, just for peace of mind?

I've never visited s3.amazonaws.com! The forum slows down progressively to the point where I can read that the forum is reading s3.amazonaws.com when going from one post, section, page to the next or sending private mail on the forum. Ususally the forum is so fast that I can't read what the forum is connecting to, waiting for or readig when on the forum.

Just scanned my computer with fully updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it detected nothing wrong.

I do appreciate your help Colin!

Rgds, Thomas.
