3rd Volunteer Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment)
I find contradictory information about what happened to this battalion in 1908.
T.F. Mills in his web-site Regiments.org says in his page about this battalion: Quote:

The first remark points in my opinion to a more or less equal share in the new 7th Bn. The second remark lets me assume that the 3rd VB was in fact a minor contributor to the new 7th, only providing some companies or individuals and that the 4th VB is the real predecessor of the 7th Bn. And Westlake simply states that the 3rd VB disappeared (but were then all those volunteers dismissed?) In any case, I hope someone can shed light on what happened. Preferable the official side of it. Thanks in advance.

I will have to see if I can find an "official " explanation but this is from " Insignia of the Kings Liverpool Regiment Volunteers, Territorials and Cadets " second edition by someone who`s name escapes me.

Thank you very much indeed!
The amount of documents members of this forum have on their bookshelfs is amazing. And the speed at which they find the wanted documentation in it is likewise marvelous. I think that page explains all. Including the fact that manpower was distributed to other arms and services. Something that was needed because the TF had a divisional organisation that required much more then infantry only. Thank you Peter for taking the trouble to answer this and manchesters for the reassurance.

3 VB KLR
Hi,
I came across a website www.9thkings.co.uk some time ago that says in 1908 the E and F 'Ormskirk' companies from the 3rd VB went on with the 6th VB to form the 9th Bn KLR (TF) There does seem to be some confusion going around. Paul |

This is what Ray Westlake says in his book "The Rifle Volunteers".

Hi,
Disbandment sounds so final, surely the companies must have been absorbed by (TF) Paul Previous deleted. Sorry my error there just realised the corps. To early in the morning. Last edited by Paul Spellman; 18-02-14 at 07:45 AM. Reason: Mis read |

Thanks for the additions.
Slop jockey, that is a nice web-site. Peter Brydon, Google Books has a part (about half of the pages) available from "Tracing the Rifle Volunteers" and that is where I cited the information in my first post from. BTW, in a few hours I expect to receive my own copy of that book . I think our conclusion is that the unit was officialy disbanded (Westlake being more accurate then Regiments.org in this case). Companies and individuals going to other units. This all inspired by the fact that the TF was a much more regularised affaire with infantry battalions having a standard number of companies and RA, RE, Transport, Hospital units, etc. needed that did not exist pre TF. All these transfers were of course restricted by the fact that the volunteers should be able to reach their units for traiining, etc. easy enough from their homes. Very few were private car owners in those times

Hi All,
I have the below photos of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the King's Liverpool Regiment, Mounted Infantry, before being sent out to South Africa to take part in the Anglo Boer War. They are I believe from Southport where I lived before moving to South Africa. I'm particularly interested in their activities in the ABW 3rd Vol Btln (Southport) KLR, MI.jpg 3 bat bugler.jpg regards, Iain

Iain,
That particular picture was the subject of a previous thread on the Forum, it was some time ago and I will see if I can find it later. Peter
