Default Staybrite Cap Badge Fantasy List

Hi Guys,

Currently the fantasy list consists of the following items - It is important for collectors to realise here that a fantasy list item is one in which the badge was never made i.e. no physical example is known to exists.

While a lot of badges out there may be considered as 'fantasy items' being unofficial issue and commissioned by various parties for various reasons (some no doubt 'dodgy') they are not part of this particular listing.

Chris,
With regard to the Welsh units I have a few queries.
1.RWF- I pressume that the list means to refer to the Welch spelling and do you mean that one was never produced in all gold, as opposed to the standard silver and gold?
2.SWB- The same question as above really,i.e all gold as opposed to silver and gold.
3.RRW- Does this refer to all silver as opposed to silver and gold.
I also noted on another post that the Glamorgan Yeomanry are supposed to have had a staybright version. This could never have been as they only wore Artillery pattern badges from about 1937 on.
Diolch,
Kevin

Hi 3478 Hussar,

I know absolutely nothing about these regiments as I basically know nothing about British army regiments full stop.

I have a 3rd Kings Own Hussars badge but have never seen published evidence of the 3rd, 4th or 8th Hussars badge being produced in staybrite hence not on the list in posting #1.

The idea here is to try and get photographic evidence of any of the badges on the list so as to remove them and 'promote' them to an actually manufactured staybrite cap badge list which I hope to produce in the future.

Regards

Chris

Default Fantasy anodised.

Hi,
Please find attached a scan of a 47mm QC Essex Yeomanry badge, maker's mark 'FIRMIN LONDON'. For size comparison I have also scanned the anodised KC & QC 'beret' badges. I realise that the scan isn't fantastic- tried to up it to 400dpi but the website wouldn't allow it to upload. They are nowhere near as silver/tinny in real life.

I hope you find this acceptable evidence.
Regards, Steve.

Hi Steve,

We are talking about the middle badge, right?

It certainly looks OK from what I can see. The scanner you are using doesn't have a lot of depth of field - is the reverse solid?

This may well be the first item to remove from the fantasy list - keep in touch !!!

RE: scanner 400 dpi. I scan all my items at 800 dpi and the stretch/skew on Microsoft paint to 50% size both horizontal and vertical and then save. This will allow the piccy to be loaded onto most forums OK.

Regards

Chris

Hi Guys,

17 The Essex Yeomanry (Queens Crown - 47mm High)

has been removed from the fantasy list - Steves example is a first class badge.

Steve, do you have any others?

Regards

Chris

Default 3rd The Kings Own Hussars - Staybrite

Hi Guys,

Request from a collector of Cavalry badges.

Reverse of the badge is of a semi-solid design i.e not fully filled in but not 'hollow back'.

Regards

Chris

I saw one of these badges for sale at Middle Wallop last week for £35. The problem I have with them is that all the ones I have seen are unmarked, of 'die-struck' construction rather than the usual solid backed and always in perfect mint condition. Note the similarity with the 3rd Hussars which has been somewhat discredited.

Without looking at my collection I have examples of K/C RUR, Essex, the RWarks, 3rd Hussars, Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, SStaffs. I have seen the Hants Yeo, Rifle Brigade k/c, AEA cypher Wiltshire Regiment, Berkshire yeomanry, Suffolk and East Yorkshire as well with the same attributes.

All of these with blank sliders. Now I have a genuine gold Berkshire Yeomanry with solid back and Timings slider so that one was made.

Most of these were also sold by a badge dealer in Colchester who openly sells restrike bi-metal badges. I would love all these 1950's badges to be genuine but I doubt it. Research is still ongoing but the majority of 1950's pattern badges that I have were actually worn by the TA or cadets in the '60s and '70s.

Either someone has unearthed a box of 1950's unissued badges made in a way that is generally not found in 1960's, and later era, badges or someone has faked them: likely to have been John Gaylor's private commissions according to several sources.

Alan

Default Fantasy anodised badges

Chris,
Glad you approved of the Essex Yeomanry badge. It is solid backed, not concave. If I remember right I picked it up at the old Saturday Charing Cross Market many moons ago. I have never found any official references to it so if you know of anywhere worth researching I would love to know.
Regards, Steve.

Hi Alan G,

I would have to say that this is a fake item.

I purchased one of these a while back now and it together with others are shown on the fake anodised badge listing here on the forum.

Compare it with other hollowback staybrites and you will find that it is very thin and the slider looks wrong too.

Beware the slider bit thought as some joker is sticking authentic named sliders on fake badge bodies.

Can you send badge back to the original seller?

Regards

Chris

Hi Steve,

Indeed a nice badge and one I would like to own - it must also be a pretty rare item too!!!

Alan O may be able to help re: references and I may be able to find something too.

Regards

Chris
