No.1 Plt.No.1 Coy.231st Battalion, CEF

The 231st Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Based in Vancouver, the unit began recruiting in early 1916 in that city and the surrounding district. After sailing to England in April 1917, the battalion was absorbed into the 24th Reserve Battalion on April 22, 1917. The 231st Battalion, CEF had one Officer Commanding: Lieut-Col. F. E. Leach. This photo was taken 16-10-17 which does not match the info above Notice the feather in the bonnet worn behind the cap badge.

Although he's not in the photograph, Francis Easton Leach was born in Montreal on November 24, 1875. He graduated from RMC in 1896. He served in South Africa with the 1st CMR and was awarded the Queen's Medal with 3 clasps.
He was a Lieutenant in the 72nd Regiment, when he was made a Temporary Lt Col on March 10, 1916, whilst commanding a CEF battalion. In civilian life he was a civil engineer. He died in 1954. |
