Brahmin (Brahman?) officer's badge.
Does anyone know this badge? Gurkha.. Is this in your frame of reference as I believe that there are Brahmin officers in the Gurkhas?

Similar (but without the figure 1 in the centre to RHW Cox number 2380 (1st Brahmans officers' badge). And, if I may be so bold - Gurkhas, please (when in British service (2 GR notwithstanding))

I do not understand the word "Gurkha" here. Even when there were people of the brahman caste in a Gurkha regiment, they would wear the badge of that Gurkha regiment.
The caption says it is the 1st Brahmans. The 1st Brahmans existed from the 1903 unification of the Indian Army until the 1922 reorganisation, when they became the 4th Bn, 1st Punjab Regiment. From 1901 - 1903 they where the 1st Brahman Infantry of the Bengal Army. (The caption fits this also). Before 1901 they were the 1st Regiment of Bengal Infantry. One of the few Bengal regiments that survived the Great Mutiny. Before the Great Mutiny they where the 21st BNI. They where indeed raised in 1776 (as the badge says) as the 30th Bn of BNI, renumbered 23rd in the same year. There was more renumbering, but I think that is not important here. The picture I have of the 1st Brahmans badge is very different (a crowned number 1 with a scroll BRAHMAN'S beneath. but officers badges (especialy 1901 - 1903) could be different. OTOH I vaguely remember I have seen badges with fish earlier.

Thank you all and forgive my spelling. Is this a rare badge or common?

I think the 'Gurkha' was directed at me. Agree with the above posts a unit in its own right. Any of that cast in the gurkha's wore normal regt cap badge.

1928 Cap Badge
I have just recently come across this cap badge made in 1928 by JR Gaunt in Birmingham, according to the hallmarks.
It is solid silver and I am keen to trace its history. |

Officers cap/pagri badge 1st Brahmans. WW1 period. Regiment disbanded if I recall correctly in 1922. Served in Aden. Only 3 IDSMs awarded for service in WW1. I had the only one awarded to an NCO which I regretfully sold some years ago.
If you ever plan to sell the badge, please let me know. |

Hi Timbobbill, Here are images of the badges worn by this regiment from Ashok Nath's book Sowars and Sepoys in the Great War and a brief summary of services of this regiment during the Great War. Rgds Tom.
