Thanks Marc , I am still of the opinion that it is connected to the 3rd Brigade.

The eBay example looks like a sample (sealed pattern ?) version and the "approval" date of 25/2/64 would tie in with the 3rd Malaysian Infantry Brigade HQ planning to take over East Brigade in Tawau (Sabah). I can't find any info about how long that specific 'pattern' was used and the unit is still around today , so their could be slight variations in shape/colour etc.

Quote:
Operation Claret
Claret was the code name given to operations conducted from about July 1964 until July 1966 from East Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah) across the border in Indonesian Kalimantan during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation.

The extent to which Malaysian Army units undertook Claret operations is also unclear.
West Brigade (HQ 99 Gurkha Infantry Brigade), frontage 623 miles (1,003 km), 5 battalions.
Central Brigade (HQ 51 Gurkha Infantry Brigade), frontage 267 miles (430 km), 2 battalions.
East Brigade (HQ 3 Malaysian Brigade), frontage 81 miles (130 km), 3 battalions.

While the patch 'may' be for 3rd (Malaysian)Infantry Brigade (which is still using the crossed tusks on red background symbol today) it is also possible that each of the 3 battalions had numbered patches ?
