One of the badge groups I follow on social media has a self-appointed guru - who, to be fair, has a lot of collecting experience but still expects his opinion to be final and inviolate - has been giving his imprimatur of authenticity to any and all badges so marked. I know what I think.

Default Marples & Beasley - Updated list 24 February 2022

There seems to be a general consensus on the Forum that the maker mark MARPLES & BEASLEY over BIRMINGHAM should not appear on the sliders of 'other ranks' badges made in white metal (WM), gilding metal (GM) or bi-metal (BIM). The mark is therefore an indicator that the badge is not genuine (i.e. a fake or reproduction), or that it is perhaps a genuine badge and the mark has been added to provide spurious verisimilitude. There is also evidence that a good badge may have had a marked replacement slider added.

The following list (not exhaustive) is an attempt to cover badges that have been seen for sale and/or have been identified on this Forum by members in recent years.

Default Marples & Beasley

I’ve never seen a RFC, RNAS or RAF badge with this maker’s mark

Likely to be fantasy piece that was only made in a/a for ORs. The Dorsetshire were still is use when the regt joined the Bde and the TA/Cadets used up those before the a/a were issued in mid 60s.

Can’t see it on the list but I’m positive I saw a Royal Guernsey Light Infantry last week. Sadly I don’t think I saved pics and cannot find it now.

Alan,
Yes, there is general agreement that most if not all other ranks cap badges made in GM, WM or BIM with sliders marked MARPLES & BEASLEY over BIRMINGHAM are likely to be restrikes, reproductions or fakes. The maker mark has been added to enhance their “desirability” to collectors usually with a consequent price hike. However, there are a few examples which may be genuine badges but have their original sliders replaced.

More than 60 different marked badges have been seen so far. No doubt there are many more out there!
