Default Australian Signaller - World War 1

Note the signaller badge on his hat - quite unusual.

4650 Private Gottlieb Abraham Dietrich,14th Reinforcements, 14th Battalion, of Mirboo, Vic. Pte Dietrich enlisted on 28 January 1916 and embarked aboard HMAT Ballarat in Melbourne on 18 February 1918. He returned to Australia as a lance corporal on 17 February 1919. On 17 June 1919 he was awarded a Military Medal 'for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Ascension Wood on 18 September 1918.' Note he is wearing the badge which denotes that he is a qualified signaller on his right sleeve and his hat.

Enjoy!

Mick

Seems its a broken link to the photo.

You can probably find it again in the AWM online collection.

Image ID is DA13788

Thanks Mick,

Will see what I can find...

Gottlieb enlisted on 23 August 1915, went to Geelong Vic for Signals Training, joined 14 Battalion 28 January 1916, embarked 18 February 1916, first to Egypt then to France. He was wounded 3 times, twice by gas shells. made a L/Cpl 3 October 1918 after MM action on 18 September 1918 returned to Australia in HMAT Lancashire 7 February 1919.

I have his slouch hat, his tunic & puttees but they were issued new for him to receive the MM.I have a pile of badges he collected, I'll see if I can find the signals badge... I also have some 'photos of him when convalescing but have never seen one from the MM ceremony.

Thanks,
Daisy in Dili.
