Another 2nd Bn example, silver plated back star one piece yellow brass overlay this time with swallow tail scrolls. Plated St. Andrew wth cloth backing. Have removed the cloth to show how St. Andrew is fixed to the wreath. Squat copper lugs and the cotter pin fits better upside down.

2nd Bn SNCOs badge. A very fine example silver plated back star one piece yellow brass overlay silver St. Andrew, voided center with green cloth backed with waxed paper. Only the front of the badge is plated.

Fantastic badge Ron. That is exactly the badge I'm after to complete the badges of my known ancestors up to the end of WW1. I suspect I may have a long wait and save my pennies!

2nd Bn SNCOs glengarry, this example all die-struck. Yellow brass one piece overlay, silver plated star and St. Andrew green cloth removed to show soldered tabs holding St. Andrew to the oval.

Sgts 2nd Bn die-struck white metal and gm no scrolls. I believe this was the first pattern adopted when the 2nd Bn was created in 1881.
It is basicly a 42nd Sgts with St. Andrew replacing the numerals. Hard to say if the lugs are replacements or not?

Mounted with a copper overlay bearing a silver St. Andrew, gilt now gone and stained with a dark lacquer.

Ron, another cracking badge! The variation in construction and detail is a revelation. Judging by the stickers on the back of your badges you must own a very high proportion of the surviving badges! Do you display these badges or keep them tucked away in boxes?

Does a non-sphinxed TF SNCO bi-metal badge exist to your knowledge?

Bryan, badges are kept in mahogany cases in three different locations,
my numbering system is chaotic but total mumbers exceed 1,000.
I have other collections apart from Black Watch see my off topic thread.
No I have never seen a TF bi-metal badge.
Ron.

Sgts 2nd Bn bonnet badge.
Cast white metal back star with a brassy appearance, applied scrolls held by copper rivets. GM overlay and a silver St. Andrew. Long copper loops possibly for feather bonnet.

Silver plate and gilt volunteer officers glengarry style badge 43mm high. The top and bottom scrolls held under the overlay which is held on by copper rivets. Two silver loops to the reverse. Top point of star bent forward to suit whatever it was worn on.

Ron, that is an interesting badge. Not least the construction but the fact that it is Sphinx-less. I take it there is no indication that it originally had one?

What are your thoughts on the date?

Hi Ron,

A very interesting little badge you have there and of course some amazing examples being shared from your world-class collection.

I have (as you probably remember) a similar small size QVC badge, it's my only Victorian example as I recall, so will share it here for interest. Also this little beauty is one of my all time favorites (along with my small 1st Vols ).

Cheers and keep up the good work..

Roy.

Yes you are correct Roy there is no indication there was ever a Sphinx on that badge.
You have beaten me to the post on your small Vic badge I will post my examples of that badge soon.
Ron.
