My reading of it is he can still take part in the parade as a squaddie, but will no longer be a standard bearer or other official due to insurance cover.

Interesting to note that he was "awarded" The International Submarine Service Medal. Why do people feel the need to add all these spurious awards to the ones that have been offically awarded. There is an old chap in my branch of the RBL who served for two years national service with the RAF. he served his entire two years in Lincolnshire yet wears no fewer than EIGHT medals on the various parades that he attends.

Very sad really !

Paul,

I agree, when my dad gave me his medals I don't think they had ever been out of the little envelopes until I had them mounted, its funny some people feel the need to buy additional medals whilst others don't seem to place any values on those they earned.

Agreed totally, my gt Uncle won the MM in WW1 while in the MGC. We only found out about it in the past year. He never accpeted the medal and the family had no clue.

You can only imagine how that was won.

cheers,
Andy C

I agree with all you say. The excellent TV series "The World At War" is/was recently repeated on the "Yesterday" channel. One episode showed a recorded interview with three gentlemen who had taken part in a particular engagement/operation during WWII, the interview took place in the (I guess) 1960's. They appeared smartly dressed but with not a medal, regimental tie or badge between them. Three very dignified gentlemen who told their story without the need for embellishments of any kind.

How times have changed. If such an interview took place today I would bet that those involved would appear wearing medals, half a dozen association badges and perhaps even badge festooned berets. Is that a good thing? I suppose its is down to personal choice and personal opinion. For what its worth I prefer the 1960's version.

Dave.

I thought this wearing of commemorative medals, or whatever name they go by had been banned by the RBL, or perhaps it is just discouraged.

I am surprised no one has put him in the picture. I would be interested to see the medals he wears. 2 years in the RAF in Lincolnshire, perhaps he deserves them Sorry Poachers, only jesting.

I have tried, alas in vain. There is no fool like an old fool, unfortunately the movers and shakers on the committee (average age 79.75 years old - 100% true) seem to think that it is ok. One of the reasons why I have found myself a new branch - sadly the RBL is full of these old buffoons nowadays (or is it just in my county)
