I am pretty sure that would keep the retention levels up as well, especially if bars were dished out for 5 year stints from basic. The mutiples would achieve that age sucking LS then.
I'm going to get an ebay badge.
As a collector and a veteran I'm loath to take my offical badge out of the box and wear it in case it gets lost. After 31 (and a bit) years service and managing (through no effort on my part I assure you) to avoid every conflict we have been involved in I have very few medals, and have, I admit toyed with the idea of getting a 'bling' medal of some sort. Not to beef up my boring service career, but to show the extent of my service.

It's not the bling medals which are the problem. If you qualify for those then it's your right to have them even if wearing them is a bit dubious.

No, the real problem comes when people wear awards which they've no entitlement to. That's when they really become Walts.

I seem to remember signing a petition in support of that.

It's not just the medals. There is a 'dealer' on ebay and SMM who when he sold me a duff badge, claimed to be a serving officer in 2 Para who was on exercise and therefore could not return my emails - complete liar. He lives in Weymouth, is a former bankrupt and has never held a commission in the Paras or any other regt. As he has a distinctive surname one does not have to be Mr S.Holmes to check the Army list and to ascertain that he is a fibber.

That should be illegal too - claiming to be a serving Rupert, or soldier.

I've had two dealers on ebay that claimed to have served when they didn't.
One claimed to be former SAS, Brit Para, RhSAS, Selous Scouts and SA Recce. He of course became well known and was eventually on TV in the UK where he admitted he was lying.
The other was in Australia who claimed to have known an officer in the RhSAS who he refused to name. He then claimed to have served with the RhSAS but there was no record of anyone serving with that name. It didn't stop him from sending someone a photo of himself wearing an SAS beret.

Both sold copies, fakes and made up items.

Yeah....that's embarrassing, seeing as how I'm an ex-Royal myself. Unfortunately, some mothers do have 'em!

The Ottawa Police have talked to him, we'll just have to see how far they go with it.

Nope, sorry - IMHO this is a very short step from the bling.

I have my veterans badge to show I served.

I would say it's a case of "Walts beware". All it takes is the beady eye of a real soldier or ex-soldier and you're caught.

It would also appear this Walt is going to lose his job over it.

Somebody has started a Facebook Group about him. lol

And he's made it onto the BBC. This guy has ruined his life because of Walting.

Certainly earned the meritorious "Order of the Walt" (and bar'red).

He should be made to wear "his" uniform..... in front of the Regiment that he has claimed to be part of

Why are they always Para, Commando or other elite unit? Why do they have bravery medals as well as the normal campaign medals? Why are they always senior NCOs or Officers?
This is what brings them to everyone's notice, and proves their undoing.
I am still not sure whether they should be prosecuted or pitied. They do seem to be a fairly harmless, just out of touch with our reality.
