Hi Mike,

I think the NEI badge was meant to be used on the European uniform of members of the Dutch East Indies army (KNIL) in the period 1942/43-1950.

The second badge is unommon but many variations exist. I would date this one 1945-46.

Cheers,
JB

Would it have been worn in Theatre, by those of NEI nationality serving in the Netherlands Army or by Dutch nationals resident in the NEI? The lower one is unusual in that it has an orange border (unlike other examples I have seen). Is the border significant or simply a manufacturers variation.

Hi Mike,

The free DEI KNIL troops were trained in Australia in ww2 and this badge is likely made there.

Very interesting thread.
JB, can you give the details on that order? And post a transcript? (If that is possible.) There should be a parallel order or approval from CMHQ or NDHQ.

Hi Bill,

I got the info from a Dutch reference badge book but these orders should be in the archives relating to the Dutch Ministery of War as it was established in London. I found some info on the web but not this one.

Bill,

I agree with Thomas, they were usually made by JR Gaunt. It looks original though.
