Lots of badges

Basically I found my great-great-uncle's collection out in the barn and I'm researching about the badges. I only have a rudimentary understanding about them, but I'm learning more as I join sites like this and so forth.

So far I've got 700+ photographs up, but some are the same badge or duplicates, I think there's about 1500 of them in all.

After talking to my brother about them we're going to have some put in cases as they haven't been displayed since the 50's

Just doing a quick scan of the images, you have a very extensive collection of Canadian Expeditioary Force badges, caps and collars, plus quite a few militia period badges and some post 1920 badges. And there are some very rare badges in the accumulation.
First thing you need to do is inventory the badges and sort them by type. (Cap and collar.) Cap badges and collars to the same unit should be kept together. I would suggest organizing them in the numbered sequence for the CEF infantry badges.

Yeah, there would be some rare ones. He was really into collecting these and coins, I've got multiple letters from the 20's in which he was corresponding with different shops and collectors to trade and buy from.

According to my mother he was one of the nicest men she ever met and that he was trained as a teacher, but worked for the whisky board. That might explain the tickets I have saying he was allowed into the exhibition place camps as an excise agent.

Right now I just put them back into the same boxes, they were sorted like 1-50, 51-100 and so on. I was shocked by the numbers of them though.

What you have is a small fortune.... out in the barn eh... collectors take years to accumulate something this good... your uncle put his time in... lucky you....

Wow - now that is an outstanding collection!

You should get involved with the Canadian Badge Project here - I guess many of those badge pictures who certainly help enhance the various Canadian badge galleries.

Hey,

I would recommend keeping your badges until you have done extensive research, some of them are going to be worth over $1000 plus each Minimum price for a cap badge is $10, most will be $30-100.

If I were you I would keep them all but either way take your time and don't under sell yourself. An auction house might be a good bet too. There are many books that can give you an idea of value and rarity (The charlton guides are a good place to start).

It would take several auctions for that kind of quality to be absorbed into the market properly and for you to realize what a collection of this scope is worth....keep those images coming.

If you were to let me know what the total weight is I will cut you a cheque at today's current scarp metal salvage value.
Seriously, that is a wonderful collection. If you were to become interested in continuing it you would find yourself as one of the better CEF collections already - all you need is the knowledge.
If you choose to dispose of the badges give serious consideration to the several methods available to you, i.e., direct sale, auction... I don't know where in Canada you are located but you should talk to some other advanced collectors and dealers - but be wary, although most are honourable there are a number of shady characters out there who will see YOUR collection as a way for them to make money for themselves. In any event, expect to pay a small percentage for their knowledge and advice. As mentioned earlier, any sale would have to be spread out in order to reap the highest prices.

I didn't collect them so I'm just going to leave them alone. I need to sort out their value at some point for insurance.

I'd be open to scanning whichever ones that aren't represented in the galleries, that's the only reason I came upon this site in the first place.
