HOME FORCES AOS 490
Can anyone tell me what units within Home Forces used Arm of Service vehicle insignia 490 and what was the background colour. What would be on the white bar? Last edited by Bala; 06-04-12 at 08:31 PM. |

The vehicle looks like an Austin 10HP Light Utility. I cannot identify the 490 Arm of Service Sign but the white bar at the bottom indicates Army Troops and the background colours would be RAOC or RE etc depending on the unit.

Unit Serial
I regret I have no record of any serials in the 490-499 bracket. I believe the formation sign is that of the first pattern GHQ Home Forces -

Attachment 61426 What is the left hand figure holding in his right hand. And given the casual dress and wellington boots (?), these three could be either Bomb Disposal or, my best guess, Auxiliary Units. |

490 AOS
The picture shows my father (Lt W. Ashby) leader of the East Sussex Scout Section Auxiliary Units with two of his men (All Queens Royal Regt).
His car a two seater Austin shows the early pattern Home Forces Formation sign. The design is said to have been selected because HQ Home Forces was based in or near Kneller Hall. The background colour of the 490 AOS sign is still unknown - Black has been suggested or maybe red. Aux Units used 490 |
