E Yorks buttons
One for the buttons specialists.
Both buttons are spun-back (officers make). The version having the silver rose in centre is correct albeit I am unsure whether it should have a black backing to the Rose. Backmark consisting of dotted circles The other button seems to have the blacking partially removed, possibly due to over-cleaning, although gilt buttons shouldn't really be polished. The central rose is not a removable fixture and has a rather strange aspect. My theory is that it may be the base for the silver rose? Unfortunately, I don't have spare E. York buttons to test this theory, so am referring to the Forum for possible help here. Maker: 'JENNEN'S & Co. LONDON and POW Plumes', so quite an early make. |

Hello GTB
An interesting post to which I suspect there is no definitive answer. It may just be a maker's variation. I attach photos of three officer's pattern buttons I have, two large and one small. Both the large ones are made by J R Gaunt & Sons Ltd but with slightly different addresses , one with silver rose, one all brass. The small one is by Cater & Co and is the only one I have with a black backing to the silver rose. I will see if I have any more of these East Yorkshire buttons anywhere else. According to Parkyn's book "some of the buttons worn after 1881 had black behind the rose in memory of Wolfe". Does he mean just the silver rose I wonder, I presume so. No explanation as to why just "some" or for how long. Regards Roger |

Hello GTB
I forgot about this Jennens mounted East Yorkshire button, so here's a photo. Like yours it has the plumes. I have never been quite sure whether there is black behind the rose or just tarnishing! Regards Roger |
