Identification of British berets
Hi,
Can anybody ID enclosed berets? What British units used them? Despite the attached insignia the berets were not worn by Polish troops .. Thanks Rafal

Hi,
They should belong to members of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. But never seen them (especially the first one with the textile lace). Best regards, AATTV |

First image grey beret.
The numbers 99-125 are part of a current Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps beret, and the head band matches that used on modern British berets. Second image Khaki (Brown) beret. This is similar to the British beret issued during WW2 and later sealed in 1945. Marc

The grey beret has a partial NATO Stock Number [99-125] and a metric size 54 so the 1943 date is clearly false and there to deceive (not very effectively!).

I'd be very suspicious of that "45" in the 1945 date stamped in the khaki beret.
There's a "cleaned" area around the 45. The date is very visible, there was no need to dampen the fabric in order to be able to read it, I'd be concerned that the 45 has replaced a later date or a post WWII 1940's beret has had the last digit replaced by the 5. |

Thank you for your comments and information.
Both items are an attempt to forge Polish WW2 parachute berets. I wanted to know more about basic berets used for this. Rafal

The '99' in the beret is part of a NATO catalogue number indicating that the item in question is UK made (different numbers apply to different countries of manufacture). Its certainly NOT a 1943 era beret!

Sizes given in metric - “54” etc - are clear indications that these are not WWII British issue.

As far as I'm aware all 1945 Kangol made khaki berets have a khaki coloured liner, their next order from 1947 had a black liner again. It would be good to know the date letter.

I may be imagining them but my comment in post no. 6 re. there being a "cleaned" area around the "45" applies here too. To me, 1945 is a late date to appear on Recce Corps badged beret. |
