Default Maritime Button ID

Hi, I was hoping that someone may be able to identify and date the attached for me. I've 5 off 18mm and 4 off 14mm of the gold buttons, purchased from a bootfair for £1! There's no back mark on any of them, but given the lined background I'm assuming they date to before 1891? I find it very confusing to read the script used for the lettering on these Naval buttons?

The OSMA button was recovered from the Thames foreshore and remains a mystery? All I have been able to establish is that, from the back mark, I think this is probably early 19th century.

I've also got some other unknown buttons from the Thames, all early, which I'll post up when I get the chance. Appreciate anything anyone can do with these tho, and many thanks in advance.

Best regards,

James

The OSMA button has been given at least two different names by collectors:
Merchant Seaman's Orphans Asylum - a valid option I think
Ministry of Supply Auxiliary - the button predates this name by a century.

The other one (N.V. or A.V.) is not in my records. Does it have an imperial crown?

Looks like it's the flat topped Victorian "Jubilee" crown.

Could you maybe post clearer photos of the gold buttons with close-ups of the letters?
Thanks.

I have tweaked the gilt button.
I think it is NV and similar to my QVC NV button query answered by Guzzman a while ago.

Default Thanks all

Thanks all for your responses. Thanks btns particularly for the MSOA ID. I've got something to go on now for further research. I'll try and post some clearer pics of the gold buttons.

Is it possible to get email notification when replies are posted?

Default Letter Close Ups

Please see attached close up shots for the letters on the gold button. Look like lower case 'a' and 'n' to me?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the link to the original post. I'm struggling to see how the second letter on my example could be a 'v' though. I'll do some more research from the New Zealand perspective and see what I can come up with.

Best regards,

Stand corrected! Looks like its a New Zealand Naval Volunteers button dating between 1858-83.

Many thanks indeed

Leigh identified the crown as the Jubilee Crown.
This would date it post 1887 and creates a conflict with Pete's (Guzzman's) closing year of the NZ Naval Volunteers.

Was Leigh referring to the "Small Diamond Crown of Queen Victoria" which was made in 1870 ?
