The US badge is the 7th Infantry Division.

And the captain wants to see how "recoiless" is achieved?

I think I can see a Kings Crown WO2 rank badge on the CSM looking at it.

From the article :

Quote:
Soldier and patriot: Bill Gilchrist, in the foreground, one of the Royal Norfolk Regiment’s last and most distinguished regimental sergeant majors whose medals are being auctioned.

The end of the war, however, did not signal the end of his career. Following a brief intermission, lasting less than five months, Bill settled in Norwich and re-enlisted in the Royal Norfolk Regiment, where his reputation as a bluff, tough, no-nonsense leader was swiftly cemented.

In five years, before embarking for Korea and his second war with the 1st Battalion, he'd risen from corporal to regimental sergeant major, the senior non- commissioned rank in the unit.

A couple of things come to mind as I look at the picture.

First, the US guy has the 7th Division patch on his right shoulder which indicates that was his previous duty unit. The current unit is worn on the left shoulder only.

Re the fellow looking through the gun sight, I would be less worried about him than the captain who is immediately behind the gun!!! A recoilless rifle is like a big bazooka on a mount, the energy of firing he weapon has to go somewhere and guess where and thus why it's recoilless!!!

He is wearing the full-size cap badge rather than the smaller post-1950 beret badge so that should help date the photo roughly.
