Northumberland Shield Badge
Hi All,
I picked this badge up this morning, it was in with a load of civil defence badges including a Northumberland title and the usual pocket badges and job titles. Has anyone seen one before? Is it a civil defence badge or was that a red herring? Thanks a lot, Michael |

Possibly scouts rather than military?

Thanks Leigh,
I am a scout leader and am part of Northumberland county so it would be of interest if that's the case but it's different to any of the old ones I've seen, never say never though. Michael |

I've seen that version of St Oswald's shield sold as scouts - but with the word "SCOUTS" above, I don't know if it was used as a military insignia other than with the straight vertical stripes of varying number.
Edit my mistake, not "SCOUTS" above but "NORTHUMBERLAND", as currently on offer on ebay as SCOUTS badges, I don't know if that's correct (of course, ebay sellers are never wrong). Last edited by leigh kitchen; 12-12-21 at 07:57 PM. |

It sounds like the seller is right, I'll attach a photo of the badges on my shirt for comparison.
My badges are actually my own from my cub uniform so date from the 70's. We have got a WW2 era uniform in our archives but for the life of me I can't remember the detail of the badge. I thought they were similar to mine as in rectangular and green but I could be completely wrong. I'll have to check it, you may well be right. The thing that made me wonder was that this seems to be on the same material as the shoulder titles but that could be coincidence. I appreciate the help, thank you. Michael |

I was a 1st New Cross Pack (The Greys) boy myself, in Brockley, sarf east Lundun many years ago - a grey shirt (the clue's in the name) and a black scarf in commemoration of Baden Powell.
I can't remember having a District or Pack specific badge. |

I'm not a fan of it being a Scout Association badge - it doesn't look like any of the varieties I know, or can see in Scout Badge Collecting reference materials

On IWM:
"Blouse Single-breasted blouse of midnight blue serge with two breast pockets, double-bar rank badges of yellow thread to the sleeves, a woven Civil Defence Corps breast badge in yellow and red on a dark blue field, and a 'NORTHUMBERLAND' title woven in yellow. Above the sleeves are a pair of 'HEADQUARTERS' shoulder titles, also worked in yellow thread." https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30096444 |

That is brilliant, thanks very much for the help everyone.
Funnily enough the patch was with a headquarters and Northumberland title. There was a few others as well so I didn't think they were all one group. Thanks again, Michael |
