Default Liverpool Scottish WW1 formation sign ?

There appears to be a cloth badge at the top of his sleeve in this picture of a member of the Liverpool Scottish in WW1.

The design looks like an upside down question mark.

Anyone any thoughts on what it might be please.

Thanks
P.

Thanks Tony,

That had occurred to me but it looks like a design on a patch.

Regards

Peter

There’s no doubt in my mind this is a flaw on the photographic plate

The mark doesn’t appear to on the uniform itself

Does it look like it is on a rectangle or is it just my old eyes?

Thanks Chris and Terry,

It does also appear to me to be on a rectangular piece of cloth.

I wonder if like the regimental bombers arm badge, it may have been unique to the Liverpool Scottish.
