Victorian Highland Light Infantry
Looks good to me, sadly missing one of the lugs and the scroll has been erased, but otherwise an original I think.

An original badge but the erasure looks recent by the colour differential.

Thanks Alan and indeed it does look that way. It came with some other badges from a friend in SA, so did not really cost much and was not claimed to be anything other than what it is.

This is my un-erased one - again with a broken lug unfortunately.

Thanks for showing it Alan. Are they expensive to get repaired and is it worth doing with this badge?

DaveC was very reasonable to replace a lug. The patina is all stripped off but a Victorian HLI badge is worth £20-40.

Hi Jerry and all,
There could be a valid reason for having the "blank" scroll although this feature is usually on the King's Crown types. I have a Victorian HLI badge with a blank scroll, albeit this is attached, and this badge is without the elephant. Cheers, Tinto |

I was told in a pm by the member concerned that he also has one of this type with the erased scroll and he thought it was period done. Maybe using up old stocks for the WWI Bn's or perhaps an old sweat who was transferred perhaps to one of the 5th to 8th Bn's of the HLI.

Hi Jerry and all,
That could well be the reason for the blank scroll. Here is the badge I referred to. It is an oddity, without the elephant. Cheers, Tinto |

Is it foreign, Canadian or SA perhaps? I remember reading about these somewhere and if the BN did not serve in India they did not have the Elephant or something of that sort.

Hi Jerry,
Bloomer's book "Badges of the Highland and Lowland Regiments" has on page57, Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers O/R's Glengarry Badge and Helmet Plate Centre w.m. Imperial Crown 1880-1904 for the badge pictured without scroll and elephant. In other words, the same as my badge, without the scroll. Cheers, Tinto Correction: After Henk's post further down, I note that the badge pictured in Bloomer's book has the monogram LRV, not the usual HLI. Last edited by Tinto; 29-11-13 at 07:54 PM. |

Further to my last post,
I note that on the same page in Bloomer's book, the badge as shown by Jerry (with blank scroll) is described as "1st & 2nd Volunteer Battalions O/R's Glengarry Badge w.m. Imperial Crown 1887-1901 (Short Blank Scroll) (Also worn by 5th/7th/8th Batt's TF Pre 1916)" Tinto Last edited by Tinto; 29-11-13 at 07:34 PM. Reason: typo correction |

Hi Henk,
No, book does not state any more details, sorry. On closer examination, I see that the picture in the book does have the monogram LRV which makes my badge more of an oddity! Cheers, Tinto |
