What could have been.
Here are a couple of drawings for the new Windsor Regiment badge from the late 1940's, early 1950's. When the name of the Regiment changed from the 22nd Reconnaissance Regiment (Essex Regiment) to the Windsor Regiment (22nd Reconnaissance Regiment) on 4 February 1949, there was great discussion as to the cap badge. Remember, in 1949 there was no way that anybody knew that the Queen would ascend the throne in 1952 so they would be looking at a badge with a Tudor crown, not a St Edward's crown.
To the best of my knowledge and in talking with some of the senior retired members of the Regiment, these were never produced even as samples, but if you do have one, please post a photo. |

Great research sarge. There is no record of these badges being made. Is there more documentation about the proposed badges? Some of the archive material I have gone through shows that years can pass before action is taken. Perhaps that was the case.

Lt Col Mason, the first CO of the Regiment and the designer of the Essex Regiment (Tank) badge proposed keeping the basic design but changing the words. Everyone else on the committee opted for a new design which became the badge we know today.
I'm researching material for a book on the uniforms, badges and insugnia worn by the Regiment. Cheers. |
