Midshipmen
I see Bryan is busy with his threads so I'll ask this as a general question, Did Midshipmen (RCN)wear shoulder boards as well as collar tabs during WW2?

Ray I am pretty certain that Midshipmen wore their white lapel badges sewn onto shoulder boards during WWII period.
I have seen examples of these in the RN but have yet to see one RCN. When I cover the RCN Officer's ranks down the line sometime in future, I will illustrate the Officer cadet & Midshipman insignia, Bryan |

This is why I asked Bryan, I suppose this is post war but it is labeled as mmidshipman and called Royal Navy.

Well I dont know what it is Ray but I do know its not a Midshipman & least not in any navy I was in!
if you saw it on ebay, anything goes there & some of the vendors have not a clue what they are trying to sell........... Bryan |

From your photograph I suspect they are not Royal Navy but Royal Maritime Auxilliary Service (RMAS) boards for a Marine Services Officer (Miscellaneous) Grade 4. (period 1978-98)
The green Cloth is for Miscellaneous, Crimson would be for Engineering and plain Deck. Hope this helps. |

Nice to have this board ID'd Antrim. I suspected it might be a merchant service board, as we have those types of insignia over here in both Coast Guard & Merchant service,

Thanks Bryan and certainly Antrim for id-ing it. Had me puzzled as Bryan you led me to believe earlier that the collar tabs were all that was worn as rank. Thanks again fellowsm, something else cleared up.

Ray as I mentioned in our corresp earlier, I never saw a Mid wearing shoulder boards when I was in the RCN in the '60's but then again I never had much to do with Mids. Actually I avoided them!
They wore their Mid insignia on the lapels of the uniform tunics - blue & khaki tunics & on the blue B/D tunic. I checked the RCN Catalogue of Material for 1962 & there is nothing in there indicating Mids wore shoulder boards. However,I do know a former Mid of the same period I was in that I can ask, & I will do that & will post his response. Bryan Last edited by RCN; 09-10-09 at 05:34 PM. |
