Chris, here is the only one I have.
JR Gaunt London King's (Liverpool), 38 x 38mm, seeded scroll. I'm not certain of date yet but I don't think it was ready for the regulars before amalgamation with the Manchesters in 1958. This will have been used therefore by the 5th Bn up to 1967. Some examples may have found their way to the LU OTC also before their own version (not Gaunt) was sealed in 1971. Certainly, since the badge is very narrow it rests on both the side of the badge and the slider so you get an oblique view to emphasize the two-piece construction (didn't try a photo from the rear to show the rivets underneath the slider). The simple digital camera is set to macro (there will be a proper DSLR macro lens in the future). The white background was a piece of white paper which in the photo turned out more grayish brown, which can be remedied in photoshop using create new fill or adjustment layer, levels and set white point. Then some tweaking with Brightness/contrast and other image adjustments, then crop and save as small jpeg. Unfortunately the camera only managed to focus on the top half of the badge, and there's quite a bit of red reflection from the wall and black refection from the tripod and camera. So, not too happy with it, but then it served its purpose. My compliments with the great work you're doing in Kew, and my invitation stll stands. Rgds, fougasse1940. |

I'll try this out when I get back. Imperial War Museum sealed pattern cards have disbursed with a few sacred cows especially with Guant and also the National Archives has sunk more than a few assumptions on the very first a/a badges. Basically the first A/A RAOC badge seems to be the QC version and if I remember from earlier to day this was in 1963. There was a non anodised QC badge but no mention of any KC A/A versions at all and no older QC variants. No mention on 'trial' badges and this file was VERY detailed with constantly flowing dates from the mid 1940's. Next is to try and sort out silver RMP and silver Intelligence Corps but may have to go back to IWM where they have a very good collection of badges inc a/a from 1970 (some missing) which have been sealed with an 'Officers Pattern' stamp in green wax. These badges are held at Regt and Battn level with collars and buttons etc. I also took some piccys of a 1903 badge item for a Yeomanry unit. Absolutely no idea what it is but it is on a 1903 sealed pattern card which may be of interest. Regards Chris |
