Missing Crown On Borders Badge?
Hi Forum,
I bought these today at auction, looking forward to receiving them. I think they are Boer war period. I noticed the extended key on the Northamptonshire badge. I wondered why the Borders badge has no crown. Perhaps it is broken off, and the badge is filed? But I wondered if any members had come across such a badge with no crown? Comments welcome for any badge. Kindest Regards Paul original (1).jpg original.jpg |

Paul,
You do sometimes come across Liverpool Irish badges with the crown missing and there is a tale that the crowns were snapped off by members of the unit with republican sympathies. As the unit was a territorial battalion I don't think anyone with republican leaning would have joined in the first place and I think that the reason for the missing crown ( as may be the case with your badge ) is that the area between the bottom of the crown and the rest of the badge was a weak point which might easily break. P.B.

Northamptonhire
I don't think the Northamptonhire Regt badge is the long key variety, this is generally found with the pre 1900 Regimental castle version.

Many thanks Peter, I will upload pictures of all the badges when I get them. I think it always helps for reference of the construction from badges collected in context. I once had about 100+ framed badges collected in WW1 that were framed during the period. Oddly not a single Gaunt among them.

Hi Rob,
On closer inspection of the photo I think you are right. I compared it to one I have of the extended key and it is not the same. Many thanks Paul |

King's crown badges are obviously post Boer war, the Borderers badge seems the larger sized post 1905 version compared to the other badges. Battle honours will confirm its age.

Some nice badges there Paul
What is the length of the Leinster Regiment slider? It looks to be quite long so perhaps dates to the introduction of the slider in 1903. I wonder if the other sliders have been clipped for this reason? |

Hi Nozzer,
Its not the first time I have had badges with the end removed from the slider. The Leinster is 6.5cm. Kindest Regards Paul |
