Off topic - South African war request

I am sorry this is off topic, but I don't know how to go about this: a friend is visiting the Tugela Anglo Boer War battlefields. She knows her grandfather was in the army service corps and has the QSA with 5 bars, but the medal is lost. She'd find it particularly poignant if she knew if her grandfather was at the battlefields she is visiting. Where may I look up for her what the bars were for a particular soldier?

I am no expert on medals, but I think that the only way to check is by drawing his service record. Many of the bars were very general for a wide area. Regards Andrew

Hi Rob,

I'm not a medal man myself, but I would suggest that if you contact the National Archives in Kew, they should be able to provide you with the necessary medal roll for all those with entitlement for the Queens South Africa Medal 1899-1902. Of course, your task would be greatly facilitated if you go armed the recipients enlistment: Name, Rank, Service Number and Unit., Oh - and be prepared to be there all day, as it can be quite a laborious process searching through endless rolls of micro film.

You can search the South Africa rolls on line at Ancestry. Give me the name by PM and I'll take a look.

Ben Walker is confirmed on the rolls as having a Queens South Africa Medal with 5 clasps and a Kings South Africa Medal with the usual South AFrica 1901 and 1902 clsps. All with the 8th Hussars - no mention of the ASC.

The clasps on the QSA are:
Johannesburg
Diamond Hill
Belfast
Cape Colony
Orange Free State

The first three are "Battle" clasps indicating he was present at those actions.

The others are "State" clasps indicating operational service in those States but not in any particular action.

You'll need to look at the 8th Hussars history to discover what they did. There do not appear to be any service papers available at the NA
