I think it's worth pointing out here that, if you didn't already know it, some cavalry colonels can be quite eccentric and they often introduce distinctions to RD which can be short lived or last for generations with their origins lost. That's what I think has happened here; the colonel has decided to apply the regiment's formation flash as a badge backing.

I only ever say the 14/20 wear the squashed chicken in black on a yellow backing.
