Chris,
In 1880 rank insignia was moved to epaulettes and 2nd LT had no star, this changed in 1902 when 2nd LT were given one star

Fantastic photos Jerry, thank you for posting. It’s especially interesting to see the scarlet frock that a few years later was replaced for regular battalions by the dark blue frock coat, leaving just blue patrol frocks in continued usage. It’s also an especially good view of the Torin type field cap favoured at that time. Note also two patterns of bullion grenade on the round forage caps and the silver collar grenades of RA pattern unique to the RWF.
