Default South African Constabulary, Vertical

I was interested to read the 2017 posts about the verticle shoulder titles. I have two examples: the very early one with separate letters & square lugs, and a one piece with the normal round lugs.

1. Was it ever determined conclusively that the square lugs was the rejected prototype?

2. Can I assume that the one piece verticle is a first issue version that was subsequently replaced with the various horizontal versions?

Thank you

Kevin
