Is it worth trying "cold solder"? I have a vague recollection of there being such a substance.

I hope it is possible to solder aluminium but I certainly can't. With aluminium and enamelled badges my solution has been to solder ordinary lugs onto small brass discs and then glue them on to the back of the badges with araldite or similar.

Ummmm - could offer better results than my other suggestions - welding torches and Hilti guns.

There was a thread about some sort of glue that hardened with a blue light.
Seems the glue was in one end of the applicator and the light in the other. You wiped glue on the two pieces to be stuck together, held them tight and then shone the blue light on the effected area. Did this work? If I remember the set up was quite cheap to purchase. Regards, Chris |

I have used 'J-B Cold Weld' in the past, it is a two-part adhesive like 'Araldite Rapid' which is also worth a try.
Mixed at a ratio of 1:1, both form a permanent bond that can be shaped, tapped, filed, sanded and drilled after curing at room temperature Mix the 2 parts and apply with something like a tooth pick to both parts. In the UK both can be purchased for around £6-£12 each and if the tubes are kept clean and away from each other in a cool dark place lasts for quite a while for several projects. Aluminium is notoriously difficult to join; you could try a product called 'Lumiweld'. It's not cheap but I would imagine even the 5 rod kit would repair a great many badges. Of course, you would need to experiment on a low value badge first to see if it worked; a chef's blowlamp would suffice as a heat source.
Here's a link, or shop around as you may find cheaper elsewhere. https://www.frost.co.uk/lumiweld-kits.html |

Hi
That "blue light" post sounds like something that dentists might use but it could be expensive... |
