Default Non-badge, Royal Navy question 928 Waterbourne ??

I recently sold some papers having belonged to a chap who was with the RAN and the RM from the late 1800's to 1945. Some records indicated he was involved with Minesweeping during the second war and this "ad hoc" reference letter from a former C/O is addressed from the boys at 928 Waterbourne Crews. Does this mean anything to anybody? It's got me stumped. I don't think it's a naval squadron. Any help would be appreciated as it's going up for sale once I get it pinned down.

GOOD OLD MITCHELL!

Thanks,

Sock Monkey VC. RN.

Yep, I reckon that's it, if your man was a matelot / Marine he was involved with the vessels supporting the waterborne barrage balloons, 928 Squadron, who were initially based Bristol area but then moved to the Suffolk coast.
What d'you reckon?

Ah, towed barrage balloons. OK. Another certificate I sold indicated he was involved with minesweeping during the duration. What are the chances he was on a sweeper who's secondary tasking was toting a balloon around? He did live in Felixstowe during the war so that adds up too.

Sounds about right - should've kept the stuff together?

Default You're probably right

Should have kept the stuff together, yes, you're likely right and I did sell about 10 pieces of it at once but when it's coming up out of these boxes piecemeal I'll be damned if I'm going to spread it all over the house trying to match things up. I'll leave that to the punters. I already got a healthy earful from one buyer for splitting things up but in some cases, that's what we wretched sellers do.

Think of it as an Easter Egg hunt,,, or a box of chocolates,,,,, or toad in the hole.

Thanks again.
