Default Norfolk Yeomanry

I thought it might help to offer my view and some images of the GR V and GR VI Norfolk Yeomanry cap badges. I’m not suggesting this is the definitive or Im in anyway an expert but Ive owned and handled lots of Norfolk Yeomanry insignia and two cap badges came from my grandad and great uncle.

The smaller approx 40mm badges seen and offered, mostly in GV in my view are not Norfolk Yeomanry. I’ve not seen anything to support them being worn and most of them I see are wrong uns, repro, restricts etc anyway. The NY GV and a GVI badges are larger approx 55mm. The badges are also a lovely golden gilding metal, sturdy, quote thick gauge and flat backed. They almost seem die cast.

There have been debates about the GV badges marked BP & Co Ld B’ham and I can’t offer anything on the maker or challenge any view as to if it’s Bodill, Parker & Co. Ltd or Bent & Parker but in my view these badges are genuine.

I’ve not seen a large GV wrong un but the GVI badge is repro’d. But these, even when faked up or artificial aged are mostly on lugs, very flimsy and easily bent, not flat backed and a horrible yellow brass. They are often on EBay and I’ve spotted several on dealers sites.

I’ve put some images on to illustrate this and as I’ve said this is just my view.

BP & Co is Bodill Parker & Co a known WW1 manufacturer. Entries in the Board of Trade Labour Gazettes 1914-19 show them being awarded contracts in 1915, 1916 and 1917.

All of the GvR badges you show are from the BP&Co die and are genuine.

This excellent thread by Ticker Riley using primary source material also gives a very informative breakdown: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...Gazette+ticker

The die cast GviR badges on sliders are made by Firmin. The other fully die stamped type shown (which mostly appear on loops) are in my belief repros.

Thanks for this info it’s most interesting. I’ve never been sure on the maker. Thanks also for the view on the GVI repros and the maker of the genuine badges being Firmin. I always associate Firmin badges being excellent quality, which these are. It’s a shame they are not maker marked too.

All the best.

Hi,

Some great info here. Sadly, I have one of the GVI repro's, so pleased to weed that one out of my collection. Just need to find a correct one now.

However, I do have in my collection a GVI badge, 40mm tall, bronze with blades and a J.R. Gaunt tablet to the rear. This was sold to me as a Norfolk Yeomanry OSD.

Are you saying that this is not Norfolk Yeomanry? If so, do you have any ideas who would have worn it?

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

Glad this info helps. On the possible officers badge I’d suggest that it is not NY. As to who wore it there have been suggestions of non affiliated units, depots, military prisons, provost that type of thing. I think this was more prevalent in WW1 but less so on WW2 when the general service badge was worn.

Hi thanks for posting the images. I’m not convinced the GV badge is bronzed more likely heavily tarnished. I’m not convinced the GVI badge is right though. Just my opinion mind.

Take care.

Here are some I have in my sales box as Norfolk Yeomanry.

The EVIIR Royal Cyphers without crowns are pouch badges on screw posts, one brass and one gilt.

Any observations or corrections welcome.

regards

Thats interesting. Can you say why please.

I am aware that in Edwardian and GVR times that Schools of Instruction staff wore Royal Cypher/Crown cap badges, (and possibly others?)do you think that they are for them or another unit.

As for the pouch badges I really dont know.

Ant ID welcome.

regards

The KC cypher on slider, Simon, looks like the Provost Corps version to me.

Phil,

Thanks for that, I had totally forgot about them wearing it as well.

Checking K & K, the EDVII OSD could certainly be MPSC, but they have the GVR one in a wreath.

Certainly food for thought, thanks.

Regarding Cyphers with Separate Crown here is a Gilt 1st Kings Dragoon Guards Officers Pouch Badge.
