Default 17L NCO Arm Motto WW1

Hi All

...an interesting Great War image of a 17th Lancer Corporal wearing a cap Motto on his chevrons.

Well, there you go. Never say never. Although a cap motto instead of Chad would certainly be an anomaly in normal circumstances, in war time virtually anything goes. This also answers one aspect of a query I had made awhile ago with regard to wearing insignia directly upon the chevrons.

...... in the Lineker & Dine Cav' Arm badge book they also show a 17L Sergeant wearing a cap motto on his chevrons in India, 1911.

It appears the regiment was a bit understrength and needed to recruit some more Chads.
The chevrons in that photo in India appear exceptionally wide. Did they have special regimental pattern ones?

I think its a carry over from the 1908 kit change CB ..... even the Yeomanry regiments wore, what appear to be, loose older style chevrons. I am sure some of the uniform experts can tell us more.

Hi Griff

My understanding is that the Chadd was worn on the top 2 chevrons but not on / over the lower chevron.

Regards Phil.
