Provenance
The word is PROVENANCE.
Please excuse this pedantic observation, but I have to make it. On numerous occasions the word providence is used on this Forum in relation to providing evidence that an item is genuine. Providence: timely preparation for future eventualities Providence: the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power. Neither of the above fall into the category of proof. PROVENANCE: the source of, the origin of or even the inception of. Please do not use providence in respect of proof that an item is genuine, you'll make a pedant a happy man. Rant over. Thank you. Regards. |

Well done and agreed.
Not related to badges specifically but just in case it's of interest, I actually wrote and article on this topic, exploring the differences between 'Stories, History Or Provenance". Link below if it's of interest to anyone. http://wilkinsonfscollection.com/wil...ollecting.html Cheerio, Roy

Thanks for that mate, very much appreciated.
As I evolved my thoughts and ideas over the years, I decided to write the article with 'military collectables' in mind, despite knives being the main focus. Cheerio, Roy

I am quite sure providence is often invoked wherein provenance is lacking in our hobby at times

Yes CB - you've hit it on the nail!
I use the word provenance - say - about badge which has the name/initials of the original / former owner of said item (I have a few KLR examples). I think I'm in the pedantic club (eg WO Pattern numbers rather than K&K etc) - particularly at work ! We'll deal with other literary transgressions on the Forum at the next meeting of the Pedants Club...... In fact I've just introduced some decent pedantry into the 'Just a thought...' thread Last edited by KLR; 07-02-20 at 10:17 AM. Reason: spreading pedantry |

If they want to say 'providence' then that is there choice
In this day and age, we can all do and say as we like, how we like. I know that because my eleven year old niece said so. Ignorance is bliss in the modern age.

Believe it or not but I recently had to correct a couple of academics for their use of the word providence when in fact they meant provenance! Quote:
