Irv, try the Dix,Noonan and Webb auctioneers site, they have a facility for online valuing.

Hello Irv,

How did the application for the bar to the LS&GC go?

Cheers,

Hi Andy,
I'm still waiting to go down to Harold's to get him to sign the form. I'd love to send it and get him to return it but his memory has gone. I'm expecting a friend from the US this week and we are going down to do Bovington and visit Harold.
I want to put the medals on my insurance but have no idea of value as I'm not in to collecting medals. Any idea?
Regards
Irv

I had no idea I could do that. I've sent a description and a photo, lets see what comes back.

Irv

Irv, I know a naval collector in Uk whom I correspond with regularly - he is very good with values & might be able to give me a ball park figure on the value of Harold's group, I will ask him & let you know,

Irv he is saying around the 1400 pound mark, dealers price, but could be higher if Harold served as a Commando in any of the campaigns he rec'd medal & clasps for.

He has also mentioned --- "If one watches the various antique shows insurance values though are always way above dealers prices for any item so insurance value probably £1400-£2500."

Hope this helps you somewhat,

RCN Bryan

Thanks
That gives me a good idea. Harold wasn't commando trained as he went in as a bugler/drummer in 39 until 42 which is when he went to Burma. By the time he came back there was loads going on and he was going up through the ranks. Thats as far as I know. I'll make sure when I see him next.
Cheers
Irv

Just checked his Company record book and no entry as commando trained.

Well, in any event Harold has an impressive group of medals with a lot of service represented there Irv. At least I think so & his group makes a good impression on me for sure! Love to meet him & speak to him on his service, too bad his memory is virtually gone. Be nice if he had recorded some of his experiences before that happened.

Lets see what kind of response you receive from DNW - they know what they are doing with medals & have specialists on staff, & should be able to provide you with a more accurate valuation.

I've spent the last 30 years asking him to write it all down! The stories he would tell were something special

Got this back. Do you think the are edging their bets? I've seen a group of three RM medal for £395!
Irv

Dear Madam,

Thank you for your enquiry about the group of medals awarded to H. D. Overbury. Subject to any unusual service details we would suggest an estimate for auction of £400-500 but stress that this could be raised significantly by additional service details, documents and photographs.

Yours sincerely,

Irv - given Podge's history, length of service plus any documents, photo's he would be prepared to include, his group will do far better than that ... this sounds rather like a 'conservative' estimate for insurance purposes.

Ritchie.

No Irv, DNW is known for low estimates, however I am really surprised at this low end estimate really - I expected better of them!

The estimates they put on groups offered for auction are usually way too low(realistically way too low, even the high end est) & usually the lots go for much more - sometimes 3 & 4x over high end estimate, especially if its something really desirable.
If I want something bad enough from their auctions I usually bid at least 2x over high end estimate!

As Ritchie mentions - the extras that might go with his group - especially with original documents & his Service Record & perhaps more additional paperwork & photos he might have (& I bet he would have a lot given his service length)would drive the price realized much much higher,
& the key sentence in their response I have highlighted in red above confirms this.
Medal collectors LOVE original docs & photos to accompany the medal(s) & will pay for these additions, generally the more there the higher the price.

If I was speaking as a modern/post 2WW era collector, I think his group would be considered very desirable, by me anyway!

I'd like to see you get a set like Harold's for £500!!
And after all, he is a film star!
