101st Airborne Screaming Eagles
I have acquired a few medals and badges from a house clearance, and among the badges were 4 of these 101st eagles, however they all seem to be slightly different, three are very similar and one looks to be made of felt.
I was told yesterday ‘if’ the white tongue eagles are genuine they could be quite rare. Does anyone know if these are good or bad?

Hi Dave,
The 101st 'white tongue' patches are a more uncommon version of the patch. I'm unsure if these are good or not but will get the books out later and get back to you. The felt patch is a nice original Brit made version. Let me know if you intent to move it on. Paul |

Hi Dave
I am sorry to break the news, but I think both the U.S. Airborne ones are from a batch we had made up especially for the re-enactors market some time ago. I believe that both types, in their issued format, come as 2 pieces, i.e. the 'Airborne' tab is separate from the main badge. We made them as 1 piece purely so as they could not be 'aged' and sold as original [by cutting the tab off, you would damage the badge]. Regards the white tongue version, there are 2 opinions on this; 1] They were purely used by the Pathfinder units 2] Quite simply, a manufacturers error. I will allow those more expert in the field to 'declare judgement' on which is correct. T |

Hello T,
I assume your referring to these two? Please can I ask what year you made the badges you are referring to? Also if the badge was one you made how would it react to the lighter test? Kind regards Dave

These 2 [hopefully attached]. They were probably done about 10-12 years ago, think Band of Brothers / Saving Private Ryan era. WWII American re-enactment was at it's Zenith about then. T |

Hi Dave,
Now at home, and not looking at the photos on my small phone, I agree with 'T' about the white tongue patches being modern reproductions. Sadly, also looking at known Brit Made 101st Patches your is not like any of the known wartime examples. Sorry but I believe all the airborne insignia may be insignia made for re-enactors mate. Hello T,
I’m not saying these are genuine, because I have no idea. However my white or red tongue are definitely not the same as the ones you pictured. Ref: bellow the white tongue only 1) The tongue is longer and thinner than yours 2) The eye is totally different 3) The 0 in AIRB0RNE is different to my AIRBORNE 4) The beak is different at the corner of the mouth 5) The stitching on the white head is totally different I also Know a lighter test isn’t proof of right or wrong but these burn and don’t melt.

They are indeed repros, and if you compared them to a real 101st patch you would easily see the difference. The eye on the white tongue is way off, as is the weave of the patch itself. Also, that many white tongues in one place would be pretty phenomenal! They are rare. I think I only had one in my collection.
The last 101st is also very probably fake, but at least does remind me of a theater made Vietnam one. But even those need to be studied. I had one case of them, but all were documented. Expect to pay around $75 USD for a true WW2 101st patch, even a Type 1. You cannot go wrong with following Mark Bando's site. He is without a doubt the worlds leading authority on he 101st, and his collection is unbelievable. I've known Mark for years and he is a straight shooter all the way! A retired Detroit policeman. I have a used 101st from SPR as well as from BoB. The first one is really dirty and came without a tab, but was a gift form a friend who bought some of the uniforms and kindly shared it with me. No, I did not clean it. Terry |
