Default Royal Naval Minewatching Service

I am preparing an article for The Formation Sign the journal of the Military Heraldry Society on the RNMWS and its successor the RN Auxiliary Service.

The attached badges were I believe used by the services but I don't know which trade or rates they indicate. Can anyone help?

Although I have breast badges and shoulder titles I'm also looking for other examples of their badges. Can anyone help with that please?

All contributions will be acknowledged and a free copy of the bulletin sent as well.

Regards and Happy New Year to one and all.

Jon

Default RNMWS/RNXS

Jon,

PM in the pipeline.

The 'MW' badges are Royal Navy, the first is for a Leading Seaman in the Mine Warfare branch, the second (printed blue on white) for an Able Seaman, Mine Warfare branch. These badges were used between 1975 - 1983 and were superseded by badges with a solid mine, used from 1983 - 1993, when the operator/maintainer badges replaced them.

The badge with the crossed sights was the Mine Watcher Proficiency Badge, used by the RNMWS between 1958 and 1963; later used as Naval Auxiliaryman Proficiency badge, RNXS, between 1963 and 1969, then Qualified Naval Auxiliaryman, RNXS, from 1969 to 1980

The second badge is the basic RNXS Engineer and was used for different rates denoted by the addition of a crown or star, these were in use from 1969 to 1980, when the uniform changed from battledress.

George

Hi Postwarden

I've compiled some information on RNMWS and RNXS badges and uniforms for my own reference. PM me with your e-mail and I'll send the document to you.

And here are a couple of illustrations which might be useful.

They depict Minewatching Proficiency Badges and RNXS Branch Badges and Grades.
