South African officers during the First World War often purchased badges made of superior quality to the usual issue variations.

This cap badge is solid and has "clips" and not lugs.

The silver variation of the cap badge appears to have been more popular amongst the officers of the 4th South African Infantry Regiment who were also known as the S.A. Scottish.

Hi Will,

I checked your previous thread with all its variations and whilst very impressive, I was hoping there might also be indications as to the sizes of the variants as this was also a factor.
Is it possible to expand on this?

Hi Iain,

I am currently in friendly South Sudan and will send a better response when I get back home.

The sizes of the badges do vary greatly and this is very evident in the portrait photographs taken at the time.

As it was a "universal" cap badge it is also very difficult to definitively state that a specific regiment used one type of badge as this is disputed by photographic evidence.
