It doesn't look very military to me. More like something from 'Game of Thrones', which is very popular here.

Hi David, sorry I didn't reply earlier. It came from a pre ww2 collection of mainly British badges which had some quite rare badges in it, all were military as far as I could tell. This was one I didn't recognise and thought it may be Indo- China related. Mike

Hi Didier, hope this helps, there is a silver wash on the branch/tree that it is clinging to. As I said before it came from an old military collection and the collector had removed all fittings and added 1/2 in by 1/8 in screw bolts to every badge, as this included cap and collars it was a mamoth task, literally thousands of them!! Thanks for your interest, I still think there is an Indo-China connection, Mike

Looks to have had a brooch fitting originally. Might just be civil costume jewelry.

Hi Didier, thank you for that, I look forward hopefully to some identification. Thomas, I would have been of the same opinion, other than the source. It was a really big collection of pre ww2 badges that someone had taken a lot of effort with. Thanks for your reply though, Mike

I think its a "Salamander" ..... not a Dragon.
Probably has a "French" connection?....... possibly King Francois the 1st.... Francis was an ally of Suleiman the Magnificent, with whom he formed the Franco-Ottoman alliance. His great rivals were King Henry VIII of England and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The Salamander was the badge of King Francis the 1st.   If it is Military it might be something to do with the French Army? The Americans have a chemical Unit that have the Salamander as their symbol .... 98th Chemical Btn? It could be Indonesian Military as well?

Hi Griff, the salamander was also the sign of the French armour, see attachments, though I also think it was used by the Fire Brigade. In fact I'm not sure what the collar badge is, I always cling to the idea that it may be armoured so if anyone knows what it is I would be grateful to know. Unfortunately it is nothing like the oriental dragon but, hey ho, hopefully one day I will find out what the badge is, thanks for all the imput, Mike

In answer to a PM question, the Queen's Bays twinned with the 'Dragons' and there were big ceremonies, one included presenting Bays with their badges...they got two silver trumpets off us, it was at a 1950 Parade in Offenburg to dedicate their new command tank.
