Few Unknowns From Thames Mud!
Hi All...
Have a few more unidentified that I've acquired in a lot of buttons from a Thames mud lark! #1 I'm guessing is a c1800 Dragoons button as it looks very similar to the 1st Dragoon Guards buttons I often get hold off but I've not seen one before like it so not 100% on it. Royal Dragoons perhaps? #2 I believe is possibly a shipping line button or something similar but not sure as I can't find this design online. #3 Haven't a clue! Guess the initials stand for something but don't know what? #4 Possibly just a decorative button but thought I'd check as it could be militia or something similar. #5 I'm assuming this is a militia or volunteer button but any help on what unit would be appreciated. Appears to be an H within an eight pointed star. As always I'm grateful of any help received and these will be for sale at some point soon. Thanks all, Phil |

Hello Phil
I would assume number 1 is the Royal Dragoons as offhand I cant' think of another 'R D'! However, it is nothing like those described in Parkyn's book but then there are so many new patterns being discovered all the time! 4 and 5 could be Militia but again, so many new types are being discovered. I will check my books and get back to you. That's the only ones I can comment on at the moment, sorry, Not much help really! Roger |

3 could be London Fire Brigade

MFB = Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

Looking at the alphabet in old script, it actually looks more like DFB.

I think fire brigade might be a good call for #3 I'll have a look through kellybadge to see what I can find. That RD button has me stumped too Roger, looked through all my books/online and I've found nothing. I thought it would be an easy one but it seems not!

If it is NFB, could it be an old pattern used by the National Fire Brigades Union?

1. a similar R.D. button is listed in Mrs. Squire's book (page 11 No. 22). The letters are at the level of the crown's band.
She states ca. 1840. Royal Dragoons 2. A London button: East India Docks 3. I have never seen this N.F.B. button |

I think the first button was worn by 1st (Royal) Dragoons over a fairly long period of time - c. early 1800's - 1840's. That particular example is probably a fairly early one.
The last two might have a military connection but I would be more inclined to think fashion/dress. David |

Could the last button perhaps pertain to an early unrecorded officers' Hussar button? Does appear military.

Thanks everyone. 1st Royal Dragoons makes sense for the first one so I'll go with that, I'll try to get a name off the back to help date it but as David said I'm thinking it's an early one.
btns is the East India Docks button something unusual as I can't find one online? I may be looking in the wrong place but I can't find one on Google? Phil |

I'd go with DFB , it could be one of the insurance companies who ran fire brigades before the LFB was formed.
