Default Unknown King's Crown 'CCC' Button

Hello all

Another button that I have been unable to identify.

I feel a bit of a clown asking on this Forum as I am sure it is not military. However, going from past posts, people on here have much a wider knowledge than just military buttons!

It has all the characteristics of a railway button but I cannot find it in David Froggatt's book (there is a Supplement, I think, which I do not have, so it might be in there).

If it is railway related (other than GWR!) then it is of no interest to me and I may well decide to sell it.

Thanks in advance
Roger

Could it be "Ceylon Crown Colony".

Or perhaps a Cricket Club?

Hello Rob

Ceylon Crown Colony' would certainly fit the bill.

I have thought through a lot of alternative 'CC' variations, mostly Cricket Club or County Council but no positive ID!

It is the King's crown, lined background and style of wreath that put me in mind of railway buttons but the 'CCC' initials keep throwing me! 'Cheshire Lines Committee' existed but the middle letter is certainly a 'C' as far as I can tell. I was hoping someone would point out that I needed glasses and that the lettering was different!

I don't know what the button is for but I think there is a clue in the wreath having thistles, shamrocks and roses.

Roger,

Ignoring the initials, have a look at the design of Froggatt, Plate 45, button 3, the wreath on your button is similar to the one on that button and to that on a number of other buttons on that plate. ( see also plates 42 and 43 )

I wonder if you are right and a Joint Railway might be a possibility ?

Peter

Hi Chaps

I have an identical button (front & back) but don't know what it is.

I think the wreath pattern suggests UK rather than colonial.

I have thought Cricket Club (but would it have a KC?) or County Council but it does have a Railway "look" to it.

Incidentally, the same button was queried in "Button Lines" years ago but was never identified.

Hello Peter and David

Some clubs, cricket, yacht and others I'm sure, did have a (sometimes tentative) connection with royalty and used crowns when you would not expect them to.

However, I am inclined to the view that it is a railway button and, as you say, Peter, several of the buttons in Froggatt do have identical wreaths.

I have been a member of the BBS for years now but I must have missed the Button Lines ID, or lack of it - it wasn't me asking!

Oh well, early days yet, some railway fan may be along in a little while!

All the best
Roger

The query in BL was years ago, I wasn't a member but I bought the back issues. A couple of years ago I purchased some buttons from the person who had made the query and I asked him if he ever found out what the button was - he hadn't unfortunately.

Crowns on Yacht Club buttons for sure but I didn't know the Royals were into cricket! That said, I know nothing whatsoever about cricket club buttons.

Hi Gents,

I find it fascinating these detective threads.

I really am out of my depth here but one thing that popped in my mind was something like...County C.... Constabulary ....?

Roy.

Quite a lot of London organisations have the thistle, rose and shamrock wreath. Examples are:
- British Museum
- Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, 11th and 20th
- London & Birmingham Railway

and Irish:
- 124th Sligo Militia
- Waterford & Limerick Railway

Hi Roy,

I was thinking C...County Constabulary, but 9/10 police buttons are white metal or chromed.

Thanks Chaps,

That's something I've learned today.

Cheers, Roy.

Roger

"BL" No 92 - page 31 is when "our" button was queried. Not that it makes much difference because there was no response.
