11th Regiment button - dates needed
Trying to find out the specific dates of a button I've seen. It is the 11th Regiment (North Devons). With the Roman numerals XI in the middle of a star, topped by a KC.
I know that the same button but with non-Roman numerals '11' in the middle is roughly around 1855-1881 - guessing that the XI is before this - poss Napoleonic? Any help much appreciated. Thanks! |

Chats1.
I think you mean a Victorian Crown. The numerical system ended in 1881 and then the button changed with a rose at centre from 1881 to 1883. Then the castle replaced the rose and was worn with a Victorian Cron from 1883 to 1902 and in King's Crown (Tudor) from 1902to 1958, when the Devonshires amalgamated with the Dorsetshire Regiment to become the Devonshire and Dorsetshire Regiment and a new button was worn from 1958 to 1970 and from 1983 onwards. But if the button with a Victorian Crown, then it was worn by officers from 1855 to 1881 in gilt, and Other Ranks from 1855 to 1871, in brass. 1855 was when the universal tunic was adopted by the British Army. I hope you find this useful. Regds, button_guru |

Thanks Button Guru. It is definitely pre 1881, but I was wondering when the button changed from roman numerals to the actual number 11. I have a feeling that the actual number 11 came after the roman numeral version.
The crown certainly isn't a Victorian crown that's why I was thinking (wishfully) it might be Georgian! |

According to Major Parkyn, the button with XI originated in 1800 and changed in 1855, having XI replaced by 11; one type having been struck with a die having NORTH DEVON instead of REGIMENT around the belt.
I hope that answers your query. Rgds, button_guru |
