Hi John, I think it has something to do with changes from Army Tank Bn. to Armoured Bn. I'm at work at the moment so can't access my files, best wishes Mike

Going through some notes and came across this interesting order. From 21ATB Routine Orders 16 Jan 1942 Vehicle Markings repeating an 11 Corps Routine Order. 36ATB has adopted the following vehicle marking. Two equilateral triangles, meeting at the apices, the upper triangle inverted. The upper triangle is dark red and the lower black.

They formed only a month earlier so did they have an isoceles diabolo upon forming or maybe adopted that later or never did have such?
John

From an official WO publication (date not known, but probably late 1942):

34 Army Tk Bde: (Jun 42)

Two equilateral triangles meeting at the apices, the upper one inverted - the top triangle blue and the bottom triangle black.

The same form of words was used to describe the signs of (and date of formation or retitling added by me) :

1 Army Tk Bde Red/Red (Regular)
31 Tk Bde Green/Green (May 42)
35 Tk Bde Brown/Green (Aug 42)
33 Army Tk Bde Green/Black (Oct 41)

Default 25 Army Tk Bde

Here's another genuine example from my collection. Probably an Italian tailor's interpretation of "equilateral". Mike

A couple from my collection - 25th Tank Brigade. To illustrate the difference in size, the 51st RTR is 50mm tall and 20mm wide and 142nd RAC (I'm presuming it be that) is 40mm by 10mm.

Particularly nice examples - thanks for sharing them. Mike

Pleasure. I may have a couple more and I’ll post when I dig them out.
