Hi, I posted this many years ago and got no reply so thought I'd try again. This badge came with an old collection of Australian badges. It has the same lugs as the ordinary badge but is cast. It is the same dimensions and is, if anything, crisper in detail, any ideas? Has anyone seen a similar item? Thanks in advance, Mike

I've never seen a cast Australian Tank Corps badge before. All the one's I've seen have been crisply stamped.

Possibly a rejected manufacturing sample? The overwhelming majority of badges produced during this period (late 1930s) where crisply stamped.

Hi Mick, as I said it is very crisp but having looked at the photo's I can see your point, I'll try and take a pic of it with the ordinary badge tomorrow. Mike

Hi Mick, hope this explains what I mean, also as I was looking at the collars I noticed the one with some gilding has lugs going in the opposite direction, any ideas? thanks in advance Mike

Hi Mike,

Another hypothesis - Could it be that the badge is only half completed and had yet to be properly stamped? It doesn't look like your typical cast repro badge.

As for the lugs, a guess would be a different manufacturing process (or batch) for the oxi badges compared to the standard brass ones. They were made and worn after the brass ones.

Hi Mick, with the lugs my query is that the standard brass and oxidised are horizontal to the badge whilst the one with slight gilding are vertical to the badge. The gilt badge is definitely cast being heavier than the normal badge. I'm familiar with the cast copies of this and the armoured car badges and there is no comparison. The original owner had a very good collection of inter war Australian badges and the only reason I was able to get this badge was the dealer who bought them, himself a big Australian collector, couldn't make his mind up as to what it was. It seems it will have to stay in the query section. Thanks again for your help maybe someone else will have some ideas, best wishes Mike

this is as mick says only half complete. this badge and a few others have come out of south Australia about 10yrs ago.
I don't know when they were struck or why but only the front die was used. no rear die and no lugs. this badge like many others were luged at a later date

Hi BC, is it possible these badges were made 30+ years ago. The lugs are the same type as the other tank badges but have been pinched, presumably to fit on a card or board. What were the other badges? Were they from the same manufacturer who used that style of lug? Best wishes Mike
