Hi Dave, they are not all that common, Exeter City Police did wear a badge with the same arms but the few examples I have seen were much narrower in shape. Do you have an image of any of the other users?

Rob,

See the attached photos. I also have examples of the smaller Arms in brass (used by the fire brigade as a cap badge pre. 1941), and chrome (worn as a general badge by Corporation staff). Its unlikely that they would go to the expense of having differing sized dies sunk if the badge was to be worn on a cap, when a one "die" fits all would suffice. The large coat of Arms on the Exeter Police board was worn as a helmet plate/cap badge. However, in earlier days the smaller version was utilised as illustrated.

Dave.

Thank you Dave,

So the brass example listed on Dead Spartan is probably Fire Brigade or road sweeper?

I like the brooch fitting conversion on the white metal example that sold on ebay, its the sort of thing you often see on military badges but that doesn't really prove anything.

Whilst the officers are clearly wearing the Town crest, I think that the ORs are wearing the standard Devonshire badge design but in blackened brass.

It might or might not have a VB title. I suspect not and the fact that it was BB and not bimetal was sufficient to show which Bn it was.

This was the badge later worn by the TF Bn.

I disagree I think the side cap badge is the Coat of arms of the city of Exeter. As in this photo of 'F' Company, 1904.

Looks like a small star to me rather than the large crest badge. it's shame they are all face on.

I have had a go at some silly resolution scans of the back row, but the detail just isn't there.

Lovely, thank you for sharing that Tim, so the Officers and Other Ranks badges do differ at the top?

This is my Officers cap, unfortunately many years ago the lion and coronet above the knights head broke off and was lost. You can see where it should be by the shape of the cloth backing.

That's amazing Tim, what are the side buttons on the Officers cap and the front buttons on the forage cap, QVC or KC, Metal or Horn, bugle or Regimental?

Until I see otherwise, I’m convinced the 1st VB continued to wear their old Exeter and South Devon insignia right through to 1908. I have a reference photo of the post 1902 pouch belt plate for the 1st Volunteer Rifles worn in the photo.
